To be a designer in PR, you need a set of skills. A set of skills that are designed to make you a good communicator, negotiator, thinker, do'er, leader, manager... After learning this set of skills, we are then shaped to becoming a companies' best friend.
We (PR students) have been told over and over again that we are not taken seriously in the industry. We are perceived to be 'poppies' and it's all about events and glamour. Unfortunately some students believed this assumption and opted to study PR, only to drop out later on.
Making reference to the fact that the Public Relations Management course at CPUT got moved from the Faculty of Business to the Faculty of Informatics and Design in 2009 proves that PR practitioners are not only equipped to become great entrepreneurs, business owners and an important aspect to a company, but that we are creative, innovative and open-minded.We are encouraged to come up with new ideas, to improve our weaknesses and to grow our strenghts. We are taught to analyze a situation, to interpret the risks involved, to be proactive and to tackle a situation critically! We have been placed in the same category (Faculty of Informatics and Design) as graphic designers, Journalists, IT, Film and Video, Surface Design etc.
We make a difference to an organisation. If I don't, then I'm not PR...
